Austro-Asiatic

Austro-Asiatic languages are scattered around Southeast Asia in two branches: Mon-Khmer, which contains both examples here, and Munda. Only Khmer and Vietnamese are national languages in this family; the rest are spoken by ethnic minorities. Most of these languages actually don't have tones; the tones in Vietnamese are a relatively recently evolved exception.

Khmer: Notes: Spoken in Cambodia. Although it is related to Vietnamese, Khmer doesn't have a tonal system and instead has roughly a million vowels. I still need the written version. Speaker: John Haiman (S)

Vietnamese: Notes: One of the few Asian languages written in the Roman alphabet, albeit with some way cool diacritics. The language is usually spoken with six tones, five of which are represented in the phrase. Speaker: Trung Nguyen (N), Long "bakjak" Nguyen (N) [no relation]
