The ancient Romans spread spoken Latin around their empire. After the collapse of the empire, the farflung regions were no longer centrally unified, and and the languages diverged locally over time. Thus, Latin is technically not a dead language, as its speakers never stopped using it. It simply changed so much that it got new names. Virtually all Romance languages are, of course, written in the Roman alphabet. There are some regional Romance languages which are not yet included here. Romansh is one of Switzerland's four national languages, but Galician, Ladin, and Occitan (Provençal) are struggling minority languages.
